The locomotive, steam engine, the iron horse. This was a fun project, basically a sculpture, but instead of carving from one solid block it was pieced together from parts much like an assembly line. Materials: soft wood from stock lumber, threaded bar, nails, glue, black and grey stain. Tools: table saw, chop saw, hole saw, planer, clamps, and various hand tools.
The main barrel is 8 thicker circles and 7 thinner circles cut with a hole saw. Then they were screwed onto a threaded bar alternating one thick one thin. They were glued and clamped as well to eliminate any gaps. The wheels were cut with a hole saw from stock run through thickness planer and attached through main frame with a threaded bar axil. Every part was planed to desired thickness and then shaped and installed with glue, clamps, and some nails.
The final product. The main body was stained black and the wheels were stained grey with water based stains. Then several coats of clear water based Varathane were applied. The final step was assembling the wheels and axils to the main body. This was made as a child’s gift, so the real thrill of it was seeing the reaction of the recipient.
